AA Car Insurance Cover Guide

The AA (Automobile Association) is without question one of the leading motoring organizations currently operating in the United Kingdom.

Founded in 1905, the AA has grown into a popular financial services provider in the UK, offering a wide range of products including travel insurance, home insurance, van, motorcycle and car insurance.

The AA motor insurance arm of the company helps customers to find the cheapest car insurance quotes available on the market, and has helped to establish the AA as a major force in the car insurance industry.

With specialist insurance quotes available for classic cars and motorcycles, the AA search a group of leading insurers to discover the best available car insurance quote.

A survey taken in 2008 found that 88% of customers found that the AA car insurance premiums were cheaper than those of their previous provider.

With online savings of up to 12.5% when taking out a policy via their website it’s easy to see why the AA has become a leading provider of cheap car insurance quotes.

AA Car Insurance Includes:

  • 35% off AA Breakdown Cover (when added to car insurance online)
  • 24 hour UK claims line
  • Courtesy car as standard
  • Medical expenses up to £300 per person

The AA also offer their insurance customers a dedicated 24 hour claim line, along with up to £50,000 in motor legal protection, your own courtesy car while you wait for yours to be repaired, and up to £300 in medical expenses per person. New car insurance customers will also receive a 35% discount on AA breakdown cover too.

The AA currently offer four types of car insurance cover. These include:

  • Short Term
  • Women’s Car Insurance
  • Young Driver’s Car Insurance
  • Classic Car Insurance

AA Short Term Car Insurance

Short term car insurance can be a great idea if you need to borrow a vehicle or perhaps add another driver to your vehicle for a day or two. Other situations where short term car insurance can be useful include immediate drive away insurance if you’ve just bought a car, unaccompanied vehicle demonstrations, or for driving a courtesy car. AA short term car insurance is available for any insurance period lasting between 1 and 28 days, and is only valid for drivers over the age of 24 or 23 as a secondary driver.

Women’s AA Car Insurance

The AA also provide specialist insurance cover for female drivers. Because female drivers’ claims tend to be less costly than male drivers, the AA can offer women’s car insurance at a more competitive rate with a good range of benefits.

Young Driver’s AA Car Insurance

Young drivers who are looking to insure their first car often have to pay the highest premiums when compared with older drivers with more experience. This is mainly down to the fact that young drivers are seen as a higher risk to insurers, and are statistically more likely to have accidents when compared with older drivers. It is possible to greatly reduce young drivers insurance premiums by driving very carefully for the first year of cover and earning a no claims discount.

AA Classic Car Insurance

AA classic car insurance provides cover for car owners above the age of 25 who own a car that is more than 15 years old. The AA’s classic car insurance cover prides itself of delivering the very best deals at the lowest prices.

I first took out an AA car insurance policy 3 years ago and was pleased with the premium of £241. Last year it went up to £314 and this year the quote was £374. I found a cheaper, better policy elsewhere but on ringing the AA was told (by the RETENTION department!) that the policy had now gone down to £298 and they could also take off the commission discount of £46.89 bringing it all down to £251.35 – a saving of £123 on the quote they had sent me for renewal.
Despite the good rate, I have cancelled my policy refusing to deal with a company that sends me a quote for £76 more than it need have been neglecting the commission discount.

My advice – threaten to leave each year – your quote will drop drastically! I’m disgusted that such practice appears to be the norm.

I drive a renault megane scenic tdi 2001 model . I have just completed a full year with AA insurance paying by instalments at £27.06 per month . I have 7 years no claims discount . I recieved my renewal notice today 8th September 2011 and was shocked to learn my payments would be £43.06 for the same car . That is an increase of £16.00 per month . Why? no changes no additional cover or anything like accidents or claims . Thats one hell of a price hike and ive found cover elsewhere ,the same cover for only £23.42per month via compare the market .com at the green insurance company . Website easy to use purchased policy online no problem and a free meerkat toy . Goodbye AA simples .

When are these insurance companies going to stop stealing from us and starting giving a proper service.

As it is a lawful requirement to have car insurance the government should step in and put a halt to these outragious spiralling costs.

I agree with most other comments on here.

I am 36, never claimed in 19 years of motoring and drive a 1.8 peugeot 306

In 2009 my initial AA car insurance was just £99
In 2010 it increased to £150
In 2011 they are asking for £300

I did a quote on their website which came up as £202 (already a saving of £98). The on-line quote also included free breakdown worth £47 which I’ve never had.

I went to a comparison website and have managed to get my car insurance down to £160

I’ll be calling the aa this afternoon to tell them thanks but no thanks…..

Renewal received, £241.50!, obtained same/similar cover elsewhere for £84, reading other reviews I am not prepared to waste my time ‘negotiating’ with them, every time I try to contact to cancel (several call made at different times) using all the numbers available you just get ‘busy, call again later’, a message also tells you that cancellation can be done online – I challenge them to find it! Very poor customer service, I won’t use them again.

Due to eye problems the DVLA has cancelled my licence to drive (perhaps until a cataract operation next spring alters the diagnosis)and I duly reported this to the AA. (The car is garaged and locked away until the operation)

Viz. “Louise” on 0870 1600 138 at 3.00pm on 27th Sept(a charged call!)and she accepted that the insurance would not be required, especially since I had issued a SORN notice and received a balance of Licence duty back) The AA ‘conveniently’ do NOT repay any unused portion of the Insurance fee (because the commision charges applied cancel a return ammount out! but I now receive a ‘nice’ letter from you to remind me that I have not renewed.

Looking at some of the ‘replies to your invitation to comment’ I feel sure you will now wish to update your 7 week old advice from me.

A disappointed customer – you have my details if you wish to reply.

I insured my car with the AA for 9 years, then when my renewal came up this year i checked the comparison sites and found the AA was offering me £300 more to renew than the AA was offering on the comparison site, when i phoned to querry this they said that i could not have this deal so i cancelled my cover on the phone then changed to hastings who saved me £250 now i have the AA saying i owe them money i suggest you think very hard about taking cover from the AA.I will now also be cancelling my breakdown cover after being threatened by the AA.

I changed mine and my husbands car insurance to the AA 3 years ago, initially we wre pleased with the price. On renewal for the second year, it had gone up, but I didn’t shop around. This year our renewal quotes from the AA, for the same cars is horrendous and on shopping around I have found lots of reputable companies at least £100 cheaper for each car, so it’s goodbye AA, nice knowing you but you will not get my business again. I also have breakdown cover, buildings and contents insurance with the AA coming up for renewal, and it will be goodbye AA for those also !!

Like other people have mentioned on here, the AA initially quoted me a very good price as a new customer, but I begun to notice that each year my cover came up for renewal it went up by at least £50.

I’ve been with the AA as long as I can remember with their breakdown service and to some degree am a pretty loyal customer to their brand. But when i bought a new car at the beginning of the year and my car insurance premium almost doubled to £800 (with 8 years no claims discount), I started to question that loyalty.

I tried submitting my details for a quote online (as a new AA customer) and found a quote in the region of £550.

After speaking with customer services (whom I found rather unhelpful at the time), they advised me to cancel my existing policy and re-apply for my car insurance cover.

In the end I received the same quote (as a new customer) for £356. Seems silly really.

So my advice is, always question your renewal quote for the AA, and in some cases you’ll likely get a reduced quote by cancelling each year and re-applying as a new customer.

Having been covered through the aa for the past year I was really disappointed when I received my renewal quote.

Nothing has changed in my circumstances (well, apart the car being 1 year older and therefore worthless less in value), but my new renewal quote for car insurance from the AA was up by over 30%!

Thankfully I decided to shop around and managed to find a quote from an online comparison site that was much cheaper.

I’ve read comments that customers have seen their initially quoted renewal prices reduced when they call them up, but I think it’s ridiculous they hike the prices up initially and refuse to go down that route of haggling on the phone.

From my experience the AA offer a very competitive initial insurance quote for new customers, but be wary of the renewal quote and watch for any price hikes!

A few months back I was involved in a relatively minor accident on the motorway (I rear ended someone in poor visibility and heavy traffic) and being insured with the AA I had to make a claim.

As this was my first car insurance claim, I wasn’t sure what to expect but found their claim line people to be polite and thorough in processing my information and overall found they handled my claim with a minimum of fuss.

The car was still drivable so they arranged for me to take it to a local repairer. The AA supplied me with a courtesy car while mine was in the garage (comprehensive insurance included, no car hire policy etc), and after about a week I got my old car back as good as new.

I was happy with the service I was receiving with the info and after having a pleasant experience in making a claim I decided to renew my car insurance cover with them when it came up for renewal.

I was a little surprised to find that my premium had more or less doubled in price (due to my previous car crash claim). So I decided to try shopping around for a cheaper quote.

I used price comparison websites to find quite a few cheaper quotes but was a little concerned about some of the hidden extras in the fine print. Things like young driver excesses, instant insurance cancellation on vehicle write off, no courtesy car, and some had auto renewals with complicated get-out clauses. With that in mind I decided I was probably better off where I was and renewed my car insurance with the AA.

After getting my initial online quote I called up their car insurance call centre and after having gone through all the details with them I managed to get almost £200 off the initial renewal price I had been quoted.

Overall, I’ve found the AA to offer an excellent service at a competitive price, and whilst they may not be the cheapest car insurer out there I think a premium is worth it for upfront prices with no hidden catches.

Also be mindful of just accepting your initial renewal quote, it might save you money getting them on the phone and haggling!

I always get that feeling of dread in my stomach when i know my current car insurance policy is up for renewal.

I haven’t had too much luck in the past with cars and to no fault of my own have never been able to build up any no claims bonus. Because I’ve had 2 cars stolen and 2 car accidents (whilst parked up over night I might add).

Due to the lack of a no claims discount shopping around for a cheap fully comprehensive insurance policy has become something of a nightmare really.

As my current breakdown cover was also drawing to a close (my 1 year free cover) I decided to check out the AA’s website first to see if I could kill two birds with one stone.

I hadn’t used their website before and found it all very straight forward. One of the main hassles about shopping for car insurance online is the amount of time you waste typing in all your details and that of your vehicle.

The AA website managed to populate a lot of the fields for my vehicle after I entered its car registration number, which made things a lot easier. I just had to input my own personal details and confirm my vehicles info was correct, which it was.

I also noticed that other insurance companies want previous claim information for the last 5 years whereas with the AA they only wanted the last 3 years. Not always easier to remember such details.

The car insurance quote I received from the AA wasn’t the cheapest I’d find (Tesco’s I believe beat them on price), but they did offer the best payment plan, so I signed up with them.

So far I can’t really comment on their handling of claims as I haven’t needed to use their claims service, and hopefully never will!

Since I took out the car insurance I have bought another, and found their helpline for changing the car details to be very polite and more than helpful, the new quote was actually a little bit cheaper than the original too.

Overall I am very happy with the service I’ve received from the AA, and found their help centre staff to be very helpful and friendly.
