Air Con Issues Account For 1 In 60 Mechanical Vehicle Failures

Air Conditioning FailuresDefective air conditioning systems are costing British motorists some £237 million a year in repair costs, and are responsible for 1 in 60 mechanical failures.

New figures published today by Warranty Direct are sourced from their database of 50,000, who warn that drivers who only use their car’s air conditioning on hot days are more likely to experience problems with the system.

Warranty Direct’s Duncan McClure Fisher said: “Too many drivers leave the system dormant for long periods of time, particularly during the winter, so we highly recommend that it’s used at least once a week to avoid causing expensive repairs.”

This is caused in part by the air conditioning systems compressor that needs to be kept active in order to make sure that its components are properly lubricated. Something that is difficult to achieve if the system remains dormant for long periods of time.
